Gluten Allergy Symptoms

What is gluten allergy?

Gluten allergy is a term we prefer to avoid because it is incorrectly used to describe three distinctly different conditions.

Gluten Allergy Symptoms
  1. Wheat Allergy
  2. Coeliac Disease
  3. Wheat or Gluten Intolerance Symptoms

Gluten is one of the proteins found in wheat, which often leads to this confusion.  Our clinic is specialised in diagnosing these conditions correctly.

Coeliac Disease

Coeliac disease is an abnormal immune response in the small intestine, to gluten.  Common symptoms include diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach cramps, fatigue, skin rashes, weight loss and iron deficiency.  Some people may have no obvious symptoms, but still suffer long-term consequences.  Patients with coeliac disease are not at risk of anaphylaxis if they eat wheat, however gluten avoidance is extremely important for long-term health.

Wheat or Gluten Intolerance

Some people may suffer symptoms similar to coeliac disease after eating gluten-containing foods, even though they do not have coeliac disease when tested.   These people do not seem to be at risk of the same long-term health issues if they eat gluten.  However, they may choose to avoid it to reduce symptoms of gluten intolerance - including cramping and diarrhoea.
